Naples Daily News Athlete of the Week, a tradition that has been going on for over 14 years, had many Naples High student athletes in their voting polls the week of March 1-7. People have the chance to vote for the athlete they believe should win, in which case the winner receives a T- shirt and an exclusive article about them posted on Naples Daily News.

Adam Fisher, the Naples Daily News Sports Reporter, helps select the nominees from game results that coaches send in. This week, several Naples High athletes made it in their polls.

“It is unusual to have this many students from the same school, but these Naples High athletes were very deserving,” Fisher said. “We try to pick the athletes that had the best or most impressive performance in their sports, and Naples athletes fit that criteria.”

Ryan Roedig, a junior on the track and field team, is being recognized for being first place in the 4×400 team and 4×400 and 800 sprint medley relay teams.

“I have never been selected for this, so I barely knew what it was, but I would really like to win,” Roedig said. “I check the poll quite frequently, like every other period.”

Ryan ended up getting first place with over 2,000 votes on his behalf.

“I just wanna say thank you so much to the people who voted for me, it’s crazy how many votes I got,” Roedig said.

Haelee Angelico, a senior on the softball team, is being recognized for her amazing pitching skills. She just recently hit her 500th strikeout on the mound in her entire high school career.

“To get picked for this was really amazing, especially for an accomplishment like this,” Angelico said. “It’s such a great feeling, especially since this is my last high school season, I wouldn’t even be upset if I lost, I’m just pleased to be noticed.”
