First held on April 22 in 1970 where millions of people gathered to protest the pollution of the environment, Earth Day is dedicated to helping and protecting our planet. This day is a reminder to everyone that we can all help preserve the Earth and it is part of our responsibility to do so.

“I admire those who dedicated a day to protecting our planet and acknowledged that we do have the power to make a change,” freshman Bobbi Newell said.

Earth Day is important because it raises awareness of environmental issues and informs the public of ways they can help the environment. The day is a plea from Earth urging people to think of their negative impacts on the planet and how they can reduce their negative footprint.

“I believe Earth Day is really important to celebrate because it allows us to make a positive impact on our environment,” Newell said.

There are many ways to help the environment either by making minimal changes or taking a second out of your day-to-day life to appreciate nature.

Here are some ways of to preserve our planet:

  • Reduce, reuse, and recycle to help conserve resources
  • Conserve water by taking shorter showers or by using water-efficient appliances
  • Volunteer with organizations that help the environment and participate in events such as beach cleanups or starting a community garden
  • Educate others to spread awareness of why it is important to and how they can help the environment

“One way that I celebrate Earth Day is just by picking up any stray trash I see, and although it is a small impact, it still helps our environment,” freshman Savannah Morelock said.

Earth Day acts as a reminder to all of us to appreciate the natural beauty that surrounds us and to protect it from harm.

“I believe it’s important to celebrate Earth Day not only to help positively impact the environment, but also because it’s important to take a second and admire the beauty of Earth,” Morelock said.
