Collier County Public School’s first ever app challenge concluded Mar. 23. Naples High School student Claire Winogrodzki won best overall for her app, Chord Theory.

The CCPS App Challenge was announced in early January for all Collier County secondary students who wanted to participate.

“20 of my students participated, we spent most of the first half of the year on programming and app design,” engineering instructor Coach Greer said. “Then they were given that(app challenge) to kind of focus on and come up with an idea.”

Students who participated, worked on their apps without help from instructors. Their programming classes gave them the skills needed to complete their apps.

The apps were judged on problem relevance, adequacy of solution, creativity & innovation in the solution, quality of GUI/design, quality of code/blocks editor, functionality & usability, quality of the presentation, and feature demonstration.

There were five categories of competition for both middle and high school students that included: best overall, best problem relevance and adequacy of solution, best use of graphical user interface, functionality and usability, and best presentation video.

The eligibility requirements included that students must compete individually, or in teams of up to four students. The students also had to identify a teacher who would be their point of contact for any info regarding the challenge. The submission requirements outlined that the app must be original, been created within this school year, and be understandable to English speakers.
