Music has played a crucial role in everyday life, dating all the way back to millions of years ago when cavemen would bang stones against animal bones to create different noises. In more recent years we have evolved to the concept of streaming services, which grant access to millions of songs with the click of a button. The main streaming service, Spotify, has accumulated 165 million paying customers as of June 2021, and over 365 million in total.

Many Naples High School students use Spotify and other music platforms to stream their favorite artists, albums, and songs. However, they vary from student to student, as everyone’s music preference is different.

“Music helps me become more productive, and can switch my mood when I’m feeling down,” sophomore Delainey Beams said. “My favorite album of all time is Honeymoon by Lana Del Rey. The lyrics are impactful and meaningful, you can tell Lana put her heart into this album.”

Lana Del Rey, a popular alternative artist, is known for her powerful lyrics and production style. Her career has spawned hits like “Summertime Sadness,” “Young And Beautiful,” and “National Anthem.” She has garnered over 7 billion Spotify streams, making her one of the most streamed alternative artists on the platform.

“One of my favorite artists is Tyler the Creator, his past 3 albums have all been great,” sophomore Robby Diers said. “I’m looking forward to his next album, which will probably be released sometime in 2023.”

Tyler, The Creator, also known as “feliciathegoat,” is a rapper known for his uniqueness from the rest of the music industry. His discography is thought of to be iconic, the most recent addition being “Call Me If You Get Lost,” released on June 25, 2021. The record debuted on the Billboard 200 at #1, marking his second chart-topping album.

“Playboi Carti is definitely the artist I listen to the most,” freshman Karl Ghorayeb said. “My favorite song is R.I.P. by Playboi Carti, and my favorite album is “Die Lit” by [Playboi] Carti.”

“Die Lit”, reached a peak of #3 on the Billboard 200, and his following album “Whole Lotta Red,” soared to #1. He has almost 15 million monthly listeners on Spotify currently, and his song “wokeuplikethis” is the 102nd most streamed song on the streaming service with 1.9 billion streams. He has made a name for himself in the rap world, and many are eager to see what projects he releases in the future.

“Madison Beer deserves more recognition in the [music] industry, her debut album Life Support has no skips, and it really shows the world she’s more than just a pretty face,” Beams said. “It goes in depth on her mental health struggles and highlights how to overcome heartbreak.”

The pop singer has recently started to gain traction in the music industry, with her most popular songs being “Home With You,” “Selfish,” and “Reckless.” TikTok, one of the most popular social media platforms, has brought her music to the public eye, and many are excited to see what lies ahead for her in the future. Beer’s most recent single, “Reckless,” has received great public attention and was named the 14th best song of 2021 by Cosmopolitan.

“Music is great because artists have no direct rules they have to follow,” Diers said. “They have complete creative freedom, letting them express their feelings and tell stories all while creating something people will love.”
